This is a Norman nasal helm variant that developed when the Normans invaded Sicily and Southern Italy. It lacks the “Phrygian Cap” forward tilt that was sometimes seen making this helmet a good transitional helm between the traditional Norman nasal helm and the “Phrygian Cap” design.

By this time, the nasal guard was becoming more stylized and the body had started being forged in one piece instead of pieced together by rivets and overlapping metal straps.

The Normans were descended from the Viking raiders that settled in Northern France. Norman comes from the Medieval Latin "Northman/Norseman" meaning Viking. The Normans invaded England in 1066 and defeated the Anglo-Saxons at the Battle of Hastings. They began the conquest of Sicily in 1061 and completed it in 1091 with total dominance over the island. The Norman "Nasal" Helmet was based on earlier Viking Helmet designs and could be worn over a chainmail coif or with chainmail aventail to protect the neck. The nasal bar was designed to protect the face but meant that Knights were often unrecognizable. The famous Bayeux Tapestry shows William the Conqueror tipping his helmet back to reveal his face and prove to his soldiers that he was still alive!
